Grandma Golda

Today would have been the 104th birthday of my grandmother, Golda Smalley Booker. Grandma Booker was my dad's mother and the only grandparent that I remember. Both of my grandfathers had passed before I was born and I do not remember my mother's mom.

As a kid, we stopped by Grandma's house every Sunday following church. I was very intimidated by her as she seemed very old to me compared to my friends grandparents who were much younger. As I grew older, though, I learned more about her and grew to respect her a great deal. She had a great work ethic, a good sense of humor and lived a long life. I regret that when she got sick that I was not around to help her. Unfortunately, I was off doing my own thing at the time and was not as aware of things as I should have been.

My favorite memory of Grandma's house is watching sporting events in front of her large console television and eating Jiffy cornbread muffins. Since we visited on Sundays, there was always some sort of game on. When an NFL game was on, it always seemed like the Dallas Cowboys were playing, and that Pat Summerall and John Madden were calling the game.

Happy Birthday Goldie!
