In December of 1998, I was going through a tough time in my life. One night, I couldn't sleep and came across a repeat of Oprah Winfrey's talk show from earlier in the day. On this particular episode, she and her guest talked about keeping a Gratitude Journal. The purpose is to take tme to show our gratitude, appreciation and love for all of the things in our lives. No matter how bad we might think life is, there is always something to be grateful for - breathing, the sky, friends, family. It's a very simple concept and it had huge impact on my life.
While I do not write down my thoughts on paper every day like I used to do, I still like to take time out for this practice here on my blog or in my head while on my way to work or while biking. It helps center me and put my life in perspective. I can be incredibly hard on myself and others, and tend to focus on the negative too much some times. The Gratitude Journal helps me put things back in perspective.
No matter where one is at in their life, I highly recommend keeping a Gratitude Journal. It's a way to take time out from all the busy things in life that we think are important to show appreciation for the things that really are important in our lives.
